Spring 2019 Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Medfield Youth Lacrosse (MYL)

Q: What is the Little Warrior and Little Lady Warrior Program?
A: The Boys and Girls Little Warrior Programs are for 1st and 2nd graders, and are designed to introduce and advance your daughter’s/son’s lacrosse skills and knowledge.

Q: My child is too old for the Little Warrior Program.  Will they be the only new player joining an older grade team?
A: No, we often have new players at every age group.

Q: When does the season begin?
A: We try to get the season started in late-March for the boys/girls 3rd - 8th grade programs and we finish the season in mid-June. The Little Warrior Program starts mid-April and goes to mid-June.  Please keep in mind; spring sports are very weather and field dependent. We have to wait until the Town authorizes field usage. The fields needs to be dry enough by the first practices so we do not destroy the grass before it has a chance to get strong enough to last the whole season.

Q: How can I volunteer as a coach or assistant coach?
A: For the boys program, contact .
     For the girls program, contact
Tommy Blake.

Q. What lacrosse leagues is Medfield Youth Lacrosse (MYL) involved with?
A. The Boys program plays in the Town Pride League (TPL). The Girls program plays in the Founders Girls Lacrosse League (FGLL).

Q. What is TPL?

A. The Boys program (Grade 3rd through 8th) plays in the Town Pride League (TPL) exclusively. MYL is a charter founding member of TPL. The Town Pride League is made up of a group of like-minded town lacrosse programs that are dedicated to providing the best lacrosse experience possible for its players.  It is a league that is configured to grade level play with the goal of developing as many players in each grade as possible. For more details on the TPL, please check-out its website at http://www.tpllax.com.

Q: How are teams created in the Boy’s TPL program?
A: All teams are based on grade levels (e.g. 7th graders play 7th graders only). For 5th-8th graders, there will be A and B level teams, while the 3rd-4th grade teams are balanced. Tryouts are held typically in November for placement on the 5th thru 8th grade A and B teams, but there is room and a spot for everyone. No one will be turned away.

For the Boys 5th-8th grades, the try-outs are organized and managed by the grade coordinator. In addition, in an effort to obtain objective feedback, we will have a number of independent evaluators.  These try-outs, along with the prior season evaluations, will form the basis for determining the teams for the upcoming season.

Q: What is FGLL?
A: The Girls program plays in the Founders Girls Lacrosse League (FGLL). FGLL’s mission is to promote girls’ youth lacrosse in an environment that emphasizes fun while developing skills, teamwork, good sportsmanship, and integrity. For further information on FGLL, see its website at http://www.fgll.org.

Q: How are teams created in the Girl’s FGLL program?
A: For the girls, all the teams are balanced so there are strong players as well as newer players on each team.

Q: Do I have to buy equipment?
A: Yes. The following equipment is required at all levels. For insurance and safety reasons, actual lacrosse equipment is required – for example: no hockey helmets.

  • Boy’s and Girl’s lacrosse sticks are very different – please verify the type of stick prior to purchasing one.
  • MYL provides goalie protective gear and a goalie stick for all levels.
  • Boys (1 – 8 grades): Lacrosse stick, arm and shoulder pads, helmet, gloves, protective cup and mouth guard.  For additional information please click on the this link: Boys equipment info.   How to properly fit a lacrosse helment: https://youtu.be/4HQdzp691bU
  • Little Lady Warriors (1-2 grades):  Lacrosse stick and moth guard.  MYL will supply goggles.
  • Girls (3-8 grades):  Lacrosse stick, goggles and mouth guard.   The mouth guard is not allowed to have any protrusions (i.e.: no tabs)

Q: Can I request that my son/daughter play on a team with his/her friend so that we can car pool?

A: As described above, our main goal is to create teams that will be successful.  Requests to switch teams will not be considered.

Q: My child is repeating a school grade - what are our options?
A: Our program and our league are organized with the philosophy of having grade-level teams competing against one another.

Boy's TPL Age Rule for 5th through 8th Grade:

1.  The TPL grade division a player participates in must coincide with the grade they are enrolled in school during the spring youth season. If an exception is needed, it can be petitioned to the appropriate grade level director.

2.  However, there is an age limit in place to provide a safe playing environment:

5th Grade Division – born on or after 01/01/2007.  Born before, play in 6th Grade Division

6th Grade Division – born on or after 01/01/2006.  Born before, play in 7th Grade Division

7th Grade Division – born on or after 01/01/2005.  Born before, play in 8th Grade Division

8th Grade Division – born on or after 01/01/2004.  Born before, not eligible to play in TPL

Q: Why are sign-ups in October?
A: We are required to submit how many teams we will field for each grade (boys and girls) by early January. Also - Boys (Grade 5-8) try-outs are in November.  We need to have registration complete so that we can determine how many teams we will can field for each age group. With over 450 kids in the program it takes time and effort to handle the late sign-ups, satisfy the coaching needs, determine equipment and uniform needs, create the schedules with all the towns we play against, schedule the referees, and so on.

Q: When will I know what team my child is on?  When will we be contacted by the Coach?
A: The final team announcements are made in mid-December.  The coaches will send out an email introducing themselves, and supplying final practice/games dates.

Q: Is there a place I can get more information?
A: The MYL website will be updated ongoing and is the first place to check for information. Your assigned coach will use your email to communicate ongoing information to their specific team.

Q:  Refund Policy
A: Refunds:  We will withhold $10 per player for processing fees if registration canceled prior to March 1st.  From March 1st on - we will withhold $40 ($10 for processing fee and $30 for the US Lacrosse registration which is non-refundable). No refunds are granted after the season begins.
